How to share family steps across iPhone and Android

A family does not need matching phones to share daily steps. The useful starting point is checking where each person’s phone records their total, then choosing a shared place to see it. Kinello supports private family step sharing on iPhone and Android, with each person choosing whether to participate.

Check that each phone has a step total

On iPhone, open the Health app and check the Steps entry. On Android, check whether Health Connect contains steps from a compatible phone or fitness app. Kinello reads these sources; installing it does not create missing step history.

If you use a watch, check its companion app’s integration with Apple Health or Health Connect. Support varies by watch, phone and source app. Do not assume that every watch automatically writes steps to the health service your phone uses.

Start a private family and invite one person

Download Kinello, create your family and send an invitation to a relative. That person can join from either an iPhone or an Android phone. There is no public leaderboard for strangers to search.

Try the setup with one person before inviting everyone. Check that you can both find the same family and exchange a message. The rest of the family can use photos, plans and chat without sharing steps.

Choose step sharing and grant access

Turn on step sharing in Kinello. On iPhone, allow the relevant Health access; on Android, allow Steps access through Health Connect. Check both the device permission and the sharing setting in Kinello if the board stays empty.

Sharing is optional. The leaderboard uses daily totals, not a map of someone’s route. Read Kinello’s consumer health data policy for the details, and let relatives decide for themselves whether sharing is comfortable.

Treat the leaderboard as an update, not a live feed

A source app may take time to write steps, and the operating system controls when background work can run. A relative’s last shared total can therefore be older than the number on their own phone. Opening the app can trigger a refresh, but do not assume that every phone has synced at the same moment.

If a total looks wrong, first check the underlying Health or Health Connect record, then permissions and Kinello’s sharing setting. A blank or stale entry is not proof that somebody took no steps. If the issue continues, contact support rather than repeatedly changing settings.

Keep the family part of the habit

Ask where a favourite walk went or what somebody noticed along the way. Raw counts are not a fair measure of effort across different abilities, jobs or routines. Let people join the conversation without competing and avoid turning a low-count day into a judgment.

For a paper version, use our free weekly family step tracker. Each person can enter a final daily total from their usual source. Leave missing days blank, and use the reflection space to remember a walk rather than only adding numbers. When you want to keep the updates together digitally, Kinello puts the family’s shared totals beside its everyday conversations.
